How recent layoffs will impact the University of Northern Colorado

The University of Northern Colorado’s recent campuswide layoffs and workforce reductions will mean fewer academic advisers, changes for the Assault Survivors Advocacy Program and an upcoming suspension of most study abroad programs.

Kirsten Fleming, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, and Keith Humphrey, vice president of student affairs, emailed colleagues about the impacts of the recent layoffs last week.

Fleming said 6.5 academic advising-related positions have been eliminated, and a revised and consolidated academic advising model is being developed.

Humphrey reported the division of student affairs will not be filling the director of the Assault Survivors Advocacy Program (ASAP) nor a a vacant assistant director position in campus recreation. Campus recreation will adjust internally, and the ASAP team will join the Office of Health Promotion.

Starting next summer, most faculty-led study abroad and student study abroad programs and exchange experiences will be suspended indefinitely. These are part of High Impact Practices, which are teaching and learning experiences including research opportunities, service learning internships and capstone projects.

A position as the director of the Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning was also eliminated. The center is a hub to discuss teaching practice and teaching-focused scholarship, according to the UNC website.

The center also says it advances teaching excellence of all members of the teaching community by providing professional learning opportunities and resources on the method of teaching, inclusive teaching practice, curriculum development, instructional models and student learning assessment.

The McNair Scholars Research program and ROTC will move to Student Academic Success. The McNair program prepares undergraduates for graduate studies. The program is also geared to helping students from underrepresented backgrounds in higher education.

UNC President Andy Feinstein said this round of layoffs are harder for the campus than those enacted in early 2020. Feinstein said the layoffs then were about streamlining and creating Administrative Service Centers for core operations.

Six positions in the Administrative Service Centers were eliminated and two searches were closed as part of the current layoffs, according to Fleming.

The service centers, also called ASCs, are designed to provide essential support services to all university administrative divisions and academic colleges, according to its website. The centers work with departments including human resources, accounting, budget and communications.

“I don’t want to minimize how difficult and painful that was, but the difference is the complexity,” Feinstein said. “This is what we did for weeks every day, was to look at the entirety of this campus, every every area, to find ways to improve the operational efficiency of this campus, reduce spending that we felt was unnecessary and reduce our workforce without negatively impacting the student experience.”

Fleming also outlined non-personnel changes and potential changes that are underway or being considered:

About $500,000 in unallocated graduate assistant/teaching assistantship funds for fiscal year 2026 and potentially a $1 million reduction in these funds for fiscal year 2027 Reconsidering funding of travel and professional development Reconsidering amounts spent on remote locations at Centerra in Loveland and at Lowry in Denver Evaluating student wage budgets, adjunct and overload budgets, the use of foundation funds, and ways to have fewer events or combine events and additional realignment.
