DWTS EP Teases the Next Irwin to Compete and It’s Not Who You Expect — Exclusive

Robert Irwin and Whitney Carson took home the Mirrorball Trophy in the season 34 finale of Dancing With the Stars. But now, Executive Producer Deena Katz is already looking at the potential cast for future seasons — and it could be another Irwin.

"I said to Terri [Irwin], 'I guess you're next,'" Katz told Parade in an exclusive interview from the ballroom floor right after the winners were crowned. She can see the 61-year-old Irwin matriarch doing the show, but there's another member of the Irwin Family that could show up on the ballroom floor first.

"I think Terri will [do the show], but I think let's wait and see what Bindi's daughter Grace does in 10 years," Katz added. "I'm not done with the Irwins yet."

Bindi Irwin's daughter Grace Warrior Irwin Powell is just five years old. She has been in the audience almost every week to watch her uncle dance and now, according to Katz, she could do the show in 10 years, following in her mother and uncle's footsteps.

"Robert and I talked about [doing the show] 10 years ago when Bindi had won," Katz said. She and Derek Hough took home the Mirrorball as the season 21 champions in 2015.

"I always knew he was going to be on this thing," Katz elaborated, adding what the youngest Irwin said to her after the show ended.

"He was like, 'Thank you. It has changed my life being part of this family.'"

Everyone who has ever done Dancing With the Stars likens the cast and crew to a family. Each season over the course of 10 or so weeks, they all get very close and the end is usually a difficult thing to come to terms with.

The celebration continued long after the show ended on Nov. 25. Irwin and the rest of the finalists got on a private plane to make their appearance on Good Morning America on Nov. 26. According to Katz, Irwin will be in New York for 12 hours and then head off to South Africa to host another project.

See Irwin on Good Morning America, which starts at 7 a.m. EST. Watch on ABC.
