American Pickers star Mike Wolfe just whipped out a fascinating piece of lore about his business's logo, which features the silhouette of a rooster crowing in front of a crimson red sun.
The imagery is well-known to fans of his long-running reality series, but until now, its origin story has remained a mystery. But in a new video uploaded to Instagram this week, Wolfe took the time to break down the creation of Antique Archeology's branding, explaining in the caption that after 16 years of the logo featuring on television screens across the country, he finally realized he'd never told its story.
"As in most stories in my life—it starts with finding some junk somewhere," he quipped in the caption of the clip, which found the History Channel star standing in front of the building he bought more than two decades ago, going on to establish his first Antique Archeology location in its basement.
He held a metal sign cut in the shape of the rooster in question in his hand, recounting some of the location’s history since its construction in 1860 for interested parties.
Wolfe explained that he was driving through Fort Madison, Iowa, way back when, when he came across a property with “a bunch of scrap metal behind” the building. He pulled over to talk to the owner and found the sign “laying on a stump in his yard,” scoring it for just 30 dollars.
Once in his possession, he said he started to think of Hatch Printery and the brand's well-known print blocks, deciding to incorporate the style into the logo. “So, check this out,” he said, turning around to show off the door and logo in all their glory.
He hung the sign back up over the “roughed up” painted red sun glowing proudly in the middle of the door, which was made to look stamped and stenciled, just like the aforementioned printing style. “So this hung right here, just like that." It was the first iteration of the iconic logo, and every time he's home in LeClaire, he swings by to sneak a peek.
"...this is the roots!” he cheered, knocking on the door affectionately. “This is the roots, man. So, anyway, I thought ya’ll would enjoy that as much as I do.”

It's a frequent compliment, one that's led some fans to beg him for another television show after he offered a glimpse at a new renovation project, while others have begun to plot out the map for a road trip to visit one of his "killer place[s]."
Some also latched onto the importance of the door, suggesting ways to preserve it or wondering if they might be able to get their hands on the one-of-a-kind piece of American Pickers history.
"How much for that door and sign Mike? ??," one quipped, as others suggested Wolfe replace the door with a replica and put the original on display in his new shop.
But, as Wolfe replied to one of them, it's the OG door," and he "love[s] that it still hangs here."
