Alabama women’s basketball fought from behind and used another strong second-half showing to defeat Harvard 80-60 on Monday.
It was a different set of circumstances than the Crimson Tide is used to. This was the first game Alabama played outside of Coleman Coliseum, and it arguably couldn’t have been any more distinct of a first non-home contest; it was played in a different country entirely, in the Bahamas off the coast of Florida.
Senior forward Essence Cody said she was “grateful to be here, just to play in this atmosphere.”
Even with the change in atmosphere, the focus was the same.
Head coach Kristy Curry said she was proud of the team’s grit and toughness as the game went on: “In the second half we were able to have everything start with our intensity on the defensive end, and we were fortunate enough to be the aggressor.”
For the second game in a row, Alabama fell behind in the first half due to several key factors. The team committed 10 turnovers, allowed seven offensive rebounds for 9 second-chance points and lost the free throw battle nine to one. Senior guard Jessica Timmons scored 10 points and freshman guard Ace Austin had 7, but otherwise the scoring was fairly spotty. The Crimson Tide trailed 30-26 going into the break.
“I’ll be honest. At halftime, we got after them. It’s unacceptable to play to that standard defensively,” Curry said. “I thought that they responded.”
That response wasn’t immediate, as Harvard widened the gap to 37-30 with 8:24 to go in the third quarter. But the Crimson Tide then kicked it into high gear, going on a 17-4 run led by Cody and Timmons and taking a 47-41 lead. It was a back-and-forth fight until the end of the quarter, which concluded with Alabama at a 52-48 advantage.
The final period was all Crimson Tide. A few layups from Harvard forward Abigail Wright were the only bright spots among an offensive onslaught from Alabama, which grew a 4-point lead from at the start of the quarter to a 17-point margin with four minutes to go.
“We scored a lot of points off their mistakes on defense,” Timmons said.
Like in its game last week against Samford, the team was efficient — it shot 68% from the field at a 17/25 clip, went 4/6 from deep and completely flipped the script on the offensive glass, winning the second-chance points battle 8-2. It also went 16/19 from the free throw line after going 1/3 in the first half.
“We did a much better job about playing without the foul and rebounding, and I just loved the intensity and grit down the stretch,” Curry said.
Timmons finished with 25 points to lead the Crimson Tide in scoring, along with three rebounds. Austin had 17 and Cody had 16, while senior guard Karly Weathers grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.
Alabama will play in Game 2 of the tournament Wednesday against Minnesota at 3 p.m. CT.
