Retired Rock Legend, 78, Will Headline Iconic Festival for the First Time in Over a Decade

Just because he retired in 2023 (after wrapping up his incredibly expansive, five-year-long "Farewell Yellow Brick Road" tour) doesn't mean Elton John is really done playing live.

In fact, the 78-year-old musical legend is planning ahead as far as September 2026, as he recently announced that he'll be playing the closing night of the iconic Rock in Rio festival on September 7th — a decision he made partly because he wasn't able to make a stop in Rio on his "farewell" tour, as he explained in a statement.

“I’ve always had a fantastic time whenever we’ve played in Brazil," John said, per Far Out. "I didn’t manage to get to South America for the farewell tour, so when Rock in Rio asked me to play, I said yes immediately. I love my Brazilian fans, they hold such a special place in my heart.”

“The energy these big one-off shows have been giving me since I stopped touring is unbeatable," he continued. "As a band, we’re playing brilliantly and we’re sounding as good as we ever have, and, importantly, we’re still really loving playing together. I really cannot wait to return to Brazil next summer.”

Elton John is grateful for the support of family and friends amid his health struggles

In an interview with Variety this month, John shared a hopeful attitude about the future, despite the physical ailments he's been dealing with in recent years, including losing his sight in one eye and dealing with diminishing sight in the other.

“I’ve still been able to play. I’m still singing," he pointed out, adding, "I mean, you just have to grin and bear it. It does get me down sometimes. But on the whole, I’ve got a wonderful family; I have two great kids; I have him [husband David Furnish]."

“Paul McCartney FaceTimes me to see how I’m doing. It’s really beautiful," John continued. "The love I’ve received from him and from Pete Townshend and Mick Jagger and people like that have been amazing. Or you get an email from Keith Richards saying, ‘Hello, darling, how you doing? You know we love you,’ and that’s it, but it just makes my day.”

Clearly John is just as beloved by his friends and colleagues as he is by his countless fans.
