In Heartbreaking Dementia Documentary, Chris Hemsworth Helps His Dad Down Memory Lane

Chris Hemsworth's equally heartbreaking and heartwarming new documentary about his dad's dementia, "A Road Trip to Remember," takes viewers on a motorcycle adventure around Australia, where Chris takes his 71-year-old co-star, Craig Hemsworth, down memory lane.

Craig Hemsworth has early-stage Alzheimer’s, and Chris Hemsworth has a genetic predisposition to the disease. The documentary follows their heartfelt attempt to use reminiscence therapy to combat it, which psychologist Suraj Samtani suggests could help Craig hang onto the past.

According to the Alzheimer's Association, reminiscence therapy "involves guided conversations about past experiences to promote comfort, pleasure, and mental stimulation." While reminiscence therapy sessions generally include music, art, storytelling, and familiar objects, Chris wanted to "supersize" the therapy by taking his dad on a road trip to remember.

"I feel I've been so busy, I probably haven't spent as much time with my dad as I would want to," Chris says at the start of the documentary.

Chris and his co-star, Craig, travel around Melbourne and Australia's Northern Territory. They stop at his childhood home, which is set up with identical furnishings and photographs, and catch up with old friends.

"It's a step back in time," Craig says as he steps into the home they lived in back in the 1990s.

Chris explains in the film that these multisensory experiences can help rebuild the connections between brain cells, which, when destroyed, can disrupt the memory networks.

"Seeing, touching, and hearing our past can make it easier to remember," he explains. "The experience of coming back to our old house in Melbourne has stimulated nostalgia and triggered memories. It feels like there's been a real benefit."

Chris has called the project "unlike anything [he 's] been a part of for a whole host of reasons."

"I'm incredibly proud of it," he wrote on Instagram after a special screening of the film. "Very thankful to everyone who poured into it and especially grateful to my parents, Craig and Leonie, who really put themselves out there with such vulnerability and grace."

"A Road Trip to Remember" is now streaming on Hulu and Disney+. Watch the official trailer below.
