The good news is that it seems like Bears cornerbacks Jaylon Johnson and Kyler Gordon are close to returning to the lineup. And while I wouldn’t call a potential logjam at cornerback “bad” news, the way Nahshon Wright has been playing lately has me considering if he has done enough to keep his job as a starting boundary corner.

Nahshon Wright tied teammate Kevin Byard III for the league lead in interceptions on Sunday by snagging his fifth pick of the year. As a welcome bonus, Wright’s interception immediately led to points on the board for Chicago’s offense on its ensuing possession. There has been some feast-or-famine in Wright’s game this season, but his knack for making splash plays in pivotal moments is something I can’t ignore. And for what it’s worth, the trends have been friendly for Wright:
Nahshon Wright the last 3 weeks:• 76.8 coverage grade (10th)• 50% completion percentage allowed • 2 INT, 2 PBU• 44.4 passer rating allowed when targeted Stepping up huge for this unit
— I (@ilannfl) November 24, 2025Nahshon Wright is playing his way into keeping his starting job
Let’s take a look at Nahshon Wright’s season-long numbers through 11 games:
5 interceptions (tied for the league lead) 1 pick-six 10 passes defended (a career-high) 49 tackles (34 solo) 3 tackles-for-loss 2 fumble recoveries 1 quarterback hitPro Football Focus gave Wright an 82.7 grade for his efforts in the Bears’ Week 12 win against the Pittsburgh Steelers. It represents his second-best grade in a single game this season. Only his 85.9 mark against the New Oreleans Saints in Week 7 was better. Wright has also had a grade of 70 or better in four games this season, including in two of his last three games and in three contests since the bye.
That things are trending in a positive direction for Nahshon Wright feels worth sharing when you consider that his overall 58.0 grade ranks 71st among 110 cornerbacks — and notably behind the 60.9 grade that teammate Tyrique Stevenson has posted to this point of the season.

Back where we were in the summertime when Nahshon Wright and Tyrique Stevenson were jockeying for position in the race to start opposite of cornerback Jaylon Johnson. What’s old is new again, as Wright and Stevenson both can make fair cases for keeping their starting job when Johnson returns from injured reserve. I’m not sure who I’d give the edge to in this coin-flip of a position battle. Wright has made splashier plays, but Stevenson has also had his moments in the limelight. If you ask me, this seems like a good problem to have. It sure as heck beats needing to pull cornerbacks off the street because of depth concerns.
MORE FROM THE WEEK 12 WIN: 24-HOUR RULE | LET’S HEAR IT FOR THE ROOKIES
I feel as if the big takeaway here is that the Bears will have some tough decisions to make because having too many capable cornerbacks is a good problem to have. And for what it’s worth, I don’t think it needs to be a cut-and-dry one-size-fits-all answer. Maybe the move is to find a rotation that works. Because when Jaylon Johnson and Kyler Gordon come back, two current starters will be forced into a reserve role. Please note that I said “into a reserve role” and not “to the bench” because that is an important distinction to make.
THE BEARS ARE HOPEFUL THAT KYLER GORDON AND JAYLON JOHNSON WILL RETURN SOON
Could we see Gordon playing along the boundary so C.J. Gardner-Johnson can stick in the slot? What if Gardner-Johnson slides into a linebacker or safety spot to accomodate a cornerback? Finding answers to questions like these is why Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson hired Dennis Allen as his defensive coordinator in the first place. But no matter what happens, Nahshon Wright has played his way into the conversation. Wright has gone from being an unexpected good story to a useful piece of the defensive puzzle. You just love to siee it.
