Late Monday evening, ESPN’s Dan Wetzel and Pete Thamel learned that Kelly’s attorneys sent a letter to LSU declaring that the university has “made it nearly impossible” for Kelly to get another coaching job. The statement comes after the Tigers said they “have not formally terminated” Kelly.
“There is absolutely no basis to LSU’s contrived positions that Coach Kelly was not terminated or that cause existed for such termination,” the letter reportedly reads. “LSU’s conduct, including its failure to confirm that Coach Kelly was terminated without cause and its unsupported allegations of misconduct on the part of Coach Kelly, has made it nearly impossible for Coach Kelly to secure other football-related employment. LSU’s conduct continues to harm Coach Kelly, particularly during this critical hiring period.”
The Tigers “fired” Kelly on Oct. 26 following a home loss to Texas A&M. At the time, the “firing” was said to be performance-related. LSU seemingly tried to renege on that reasoning days later and is now fighting to terminate Kelly for cause, which would keep them from having to pay Kelly’s $54 million buyout.
LSU (7-4, 3-4 SEC) concludes its regular season at No. 8 Oklahoma on Saturday (3:30 p.m. ET, ABC).
