Strawberry Roan will be Sumpter's directorial debut, based on a true event. Written by Courtney Paige and Julia Mulberry, the rom-com follows a young couple as they try to make their dreams come true.
The movie tells the story of "a devoted horse enthusiast (Hurd-Wood) and a failed stock market trader (Sumpter) who drain their modest savings to chase a dream across the border. Determined to start a horse sanctuary in Mexico, the young couple embarks on a journey they imagine will change their lives for the better. But as love and ambition collide, they learn that the richest reward isn’t the future they imagined—it’s the trust, courage, and connection they rediscover on the road together," per the official synopsis from Deadline.
Production for the movie is expected to begin next spring in New Mexico, with the rest of the cast underway.
Sumpter reveals that the movie, being his directorial debut, is "incredible," but what makes it more special is sharing it with Hurd-Wood. While overwhelmed, he's grateful to be able to tell a new story together.
"We forged such a deep bond on Peter Pan, and reuniting after all these years feels like a homecoming of sorts. There’s something profoundly full circle about creating again with someone who helped shape such an important part of my childhood," he said.
Since Peter Pan, Sumpter has appeared in films such as Animal, Into the Storm, and Soul Surfer. He's also appeared in series like Clubhouse, Friday Night Lights, The Glades, and Stitchers.
Hurd-wood went on to appear in Solomon Kane, Dorian Gray, and played Katherine Thorn in The First Omen. She played the leading role in the TV series Clique.
