We Now Have Some Phil Maton Contract Details

We finally have some numbers on the Phil Maton deal, though not yet the full breakdown (which I do think matters):

Phil Maton Cubs deal: $14.5M, 2 years and club option. Plus $250K incentives per year based on games pitched for the ultra reliable reliever. So good chance to reach $15M.

Maton had 81 k’s in 61.1 innings split between St. Louis and Texas last season — one of the best of his career. @Michael_Cerami was on the signing last week.

We don’t know the structure yet, but, had I to guess, I would think it’s probably a lower salary in 2026, higher in 2027, and then a decent chunk of the guarantee coming in the form of the buyout on a relatively pricey team option for 2028 (maybe they pick up the option, but, if not, it’s the Cubs’ way of creating a deferral without actually having any deferrals). In any case, that’s such a great deal.

When the signing happened, I said it was probably going to be pretty pricey, and indeed it was, relatively speaking. It’s the largest multi-year reliever deal for the Cubs SINCE CRAIG KIMBREL in 2019.

But when you consider just how compelling the case is for signing Maton, a $7.25M AAV starts to look like a potential bargain.

Nevertheless, this is just not the kind of contract they sign, and I’ll reiterate that it means one of two things, or both: (1) the Cubs really, really love Phil Maton in particular; and/or (2) the Cubs have massaged the way they will go about constructing a bullpen.

On the second point, I think it’s worth noting that the Cubs did aggressively pursue Tanner Scott last year on a multi-year deal (whew, unanswered prayers), and are also rumored to still be in on top free agent relievers from here (some of whom would assuredly require a multi-year deal). I think the Cubs will still be targeting a whole lot of buy-low, reclamation, oddball types to see what value they can create. But maybe they now see value in trying to sign/acquire more higher-end types, even at prices they have historically not been willing to pay. We’ll see.
