‘Glee’ Star’s New Musical Announces Unfortunate Update

Kristin Chenoweth’s musical The Queen of Versailles dropped an unexpected update after two weeks of its official opening in November.

The show, which was based on Lauren Greenfield’s 2012 film of the same name, depicts the story of a Florida socialite, Jackie Siegel, portrayed by the 57-year-old star, as she pursues her goal of launching the biggest private home in the United States.

Chenoweth starred alongside F. Murray Abraham, who played the husband, David Siegel.

In addition to this, Melody Butiu, Nina White, Greg Hildreth and more joined the show, with Sherie Rene Scott serving as the standby for the role of Jackie.

Amid a divided reception from the public and the musical landing its first previews on October 8, The Queen of Versailles ended the show earlier than expected.

In a post on Instagram, they announced that they would be having their final performance on Jan. 4, just under three months after releasing the preview.

“Consider this your royal summons. The Queen of Versailles will play its final Broadway performance on January 4th! Get tickets at the link in bio before time runs out,” the post reads.

Initially, the Chenoweth-led musical was scheduled to run until March 29, making the early closure a surprise, especially after the show had earned over $1 million since its opening date.

Unfortunately, the divided reception and slow ticket sales appear to be behind the show’s early demise.

In a review cited by Variety, The Queen of Versailles was praised for its “stunning elements,” from the “scenic and video design” to striking costumes and performances, particularly the Emmy winner, who was a “force” despite her character not really being a “likable figure.”

Sadly, the positive elements did not manage to make up for the show’s overall flaws.

“Broadway is the wrong medium for this story. Musicalizing the story does little to ground the audience in Jackie’s world and instead pulls and stretches the tale, when the themes alone could speak for themselves. The narrative would actually soar if it were given feature-film treatment. Additionally, adding the musical element further bastardizes this tale. Except for “Caviar Dreams,” the third song in Act One, none of the other selections are particularly memorable. Though the opening act is fairly intriguing, by the second act, the nearly three-hour-long performance began to drag, especially as the show’s tone shifted drastically,” the statement reads.

In addition, Broadway has become increasingly unpredictable in recent years, with even award-winning stars like Kristin Chenoweth unable to guarantee a long run.
