Actress Charlotte Stewart, 84, had an unusual experience auditioning to play her Little House on the Prairie character, Laura Ingalls' (Melissa Gilbert) teacher, Miss Eva Beadle.
TV Insider reported that Stewart shared her Little House on the Prairie audition story during a March 2024 interview with The Sun. While speaking to the publication, Stewart said she didn't realize how "big" the show, which ran for nine seasons until 1983, was going to be until she saw the late Michael Landon in the audition room. As fans are aware, Landon not only starred as Charles "Pa" Ingalls, but he was also one of the historical drama's writers, producers, and directors.
Stewart also shared that she decided to get a bit method during her audition.
"So they said, ‘Are you ready to read?’ And I looked at the producer who was sitting behind this big desk with all these executives around him, and I said, ‘May I sit behind your desk?'” recalled Stewart during her interview with The Sun. “So he got up and moved, and I went around and sat in his chair and all the men were kind of [talking], and I went, ‘Quiet!' I don’t think you do that to studio executives. I don’t know why I did that; it just came out of me. And I got the part.”
Stewart made similar comments about her Little House on the Prairie audition in a March 2024 interview with COZI TV. She explained that she had appeared on popular shows "like Gunsmoke and Bonanza" before landing the role of Miss Beadle. In addition, she said she was unfamiliar with Little House on the Prairie before auditioning for the part. She explained she hadn't read Laura Ingalls Wilder's semi-autobiographical book series, which the show is based on.
"I had never read the books and I didn't know what it was, so I arrived in my usual hippie attire, which was blue jeans and a tie-dye shirt. And I walked into the waiting room and there were all these lovely ladies there in Old West clothing and I thought to myself, 'Oh no,'" said Stewart in the COZI TV interview.
She also said she surprised herself when she told the room of executives to be quiet during her audition.
"I went 'Quiet!' And they did. I was shocked. I was absolutely shocked. The room just went quiet," said the actress.
In addition, Stewart shared that she believes fans have a fondness for Miss Beadle because of how much Laura adored the teacher.
"She's looking at me like I was an angel and I think really that's why many of our fans love Miss Beadle. Because Laura loved Miss Beadle," said Stewart during the COZI TV interview.
Stewart portrayed Miss Beadle from the show's first to fourth seasons, per IMDb.
