Thanksgiving is a time to gather, enjoy nature's bounty, feel the gratitude and let's be honest—look your best when you see those relatives you haven't seen since last year. It's not so much about what they think per se, it's more about an opportunity to put yourself together and feel good about yourself during one of the year's big events. And of course, there's usually photos.

Regardless of your family's traditions—dressing up and going out to a nice restaurant or putting on your best sweatpants and hanging out around the kitchen island—having good hair will make it more fun. We don't know why hair has this power, it just does.

We spoke with celebrity stylist Michelle Hong who has worked with Sigourney Weaver, Bon Jovi, Amy Schumer, Marcia Gay Harden and Peyton List to come up with some great hairstyles for Thanksgiving. These hairstyles can be worn by anyone at any age, and depending on how much cooking you need to do, some of them are more practical than others. Some are good if you're just showing up with a bottle of wine, while others could work for cooking and hosting.

11 Best Thanksgiving Hairstyles, According to a Celebrity Stylist

    1. Voluminous Blowout

    Laura Linney

This tried-and-true style is worth the effort, because once it's done, you know it will look great all night. "It's something that's smooth and chic and gives a lot of shine and body to your hair," says Hong, who owns NYC The Team salon. "It looks put together but not too done-up."

Pro tip: Use a heat styling tool like a curling iron on the ends to make the blowout last longer, Hong tells Parade. Then let it cool down and set before brushing it out or adding product. "If you shake it out or brush it too fast, it will fall."

    2. High Pony

    Jennifer Lopez

If you're wearing a thick sweater or a turtleneck to the feast, Hong recommends a ponytail to get your hair out of the way during a long day of cooking, eating and drinking. "Plus it looks really chic," Hong says. If you want to dress it up, add an accessory like a bow, as Lopez has done here.

Pro tip: Use texturizing spray to make it as voluminous as possible before putting it in a ponytail. "If you don't have any products in your hair, it will look droopy."

    3. Half Up Half Down

    Sarah Michelle Gellar

"This is a fan favorite," she says. "This gets it out of your face but it still has movement." You can use a claw clip or something dressier, depending on your event.

Pro tip: Don't create the half-up half-down first. But rather, curl your hair first, and then pull up the sides. "It gives it more movement."

    4. Dressy Bun

    Margot Robbie

A bun is a great choice if you're cooking, Hong recommends. "Do a sleek pullback using some gel," she says.

Pro tip: Leave a piece out to pin around the outside (you can also braid it!) for a dressier look.

    5. Chic Bun

    Zoe Saldana

If you are the chef this Thanksgiving, another bun option is a simple low bun. "A low bun with a middle part can look very chic," Hong says.

Pro tip: Pin a low bun tight against the nape of the neck for a high-fashion vibe. "Make it very sleek with a small round bun in the back. It's super cute."

    6. Low-fuss curls

    Andie MacDowell

If you have curls, put some mousse in and let it air dry. "But then, don't touch it!" Hong says. "You have to make sure it's 100% fully air dried before you touch it or put any serums in to make it look shiny." She says you can even cook while it air dries, as long as you don't touch it.

Pro tip: "Don't brush if after you take a shower. Just use a large-toothed comb to get the tangles out and then put in the product of your choice. "I love a non-sticky mousse and then a molding type of product that I mix together. Then scrunch the hair and shape it the way you want it—and then you have to let it sit and dry completely."

    7. Loose Braid

    Nicole Kidman

A braid can be the perfect low-fuss style for a long day. Especially if you're crafty and good at making things, then you can do a great braid, Hong says.

Pro tip: Braid the hair and spray with hairspray, then "'the biggest hack is that after you finish the braid, you want to pull apart the hair a bit so it looks fluffier and more boho."

    8. Barrettes

    Lana Del Rey

Decorating your hair with barrettes is an easy way to get festive. "There's so many options nowadays," Hong says.

Pro tip: Try the selection on Amazon for pre-coordinated sets or sparkly single clip options.

    9. Headband

    Helen Mirren

A headband can be a simple way to dress up the hair and coordinate your look. "They can be really fun and chic," Hong says. "The key thing is to find something comfortable that you can wear all day so it doesn't pinch behind the ear." She recommends a fabric headband instead a plastic one for the most comfort.

Pro tip: "Even with a headband, the trick is to style the hair before you put it on," she says. The headband is just the accessory, not the hairstyle.

    10. Soft Waves

    Angela Bassett

If you have wavy hair, go with the flow and wear your natural waves.

Pro tip: Similar to curly hair, you need to shape your waves and then let them air dry completely. "I like to put product in and then take my fingers and mold the waves," Hong says. "If you just put product in and go, it's never going to look the way you want it to."

    11. Lovely Leftovers Hair

    Kerry Washington

A perfect metaphor for Thanksgiving, Hong says you don't need freshly washed hair to get a great style. "Take day-old hair and heat style to create waves," she says. "Use a curling iron in random places, you'll have more body and more movement without having to heat style your whole hair."
