Denver won’t pick up compost or recycling this week because of Thanksgiving, furloughs

Denver residents will have an unusual schedule for trash pickup this week, ahead of Thanksgiving, and will have to wait longer for compost and recycling service.

Instead of trash pickup on their normal days, the city’s Department of Transportation and Infrastructure asked residents to set out their black carts by 6 a.m. Monday. Crews will work from Monday to Wednesday to collect waste across the city, according to a news release, since workers have Thursday off for the holiday.

Residents whose service is normally later in the week can wait until one day earlier than their scheduled pickups to set out trash. So those with a Wednesday pickup have until Tuesday at 6 a.m. to set out their trash. Homes that typically have a Thursday pickup have until Wednesday at 6 a.m. to do so.

The city won’t provide any recycling or composting pickup this week.

The changes are due to the Thanksgiving holiday and a citywide furlough day on Friday that was called because of budget cuts.

City officials asked people in areas scheduled for large-item pickup to set out those items on the same day they set out their trash this week.

Most services will resume as normal next week. The city’s every-other-week recycling calendars, however, will reset. Those who normally would have set out their recycling carts this week will instead have a pickup the week of Dec. 1, and then every other week after that.

Those who had expected to set out recycling next week under the previous rotation will wait until the week of Dec. 8, and then every other week following.
