Rock fans think Joe Lynn Turner deserved a better introduction when he was a guest at a mixed martial arts fight on November 23. The legendary Rainbow singer posted to Facebook and Instagram after he attended an MMA event in Eastern Europe.
“It was great fun last night to be a special guest at the MMA fights... Adrenaline was pumping! Awesome fights! Many thanks!” Turner wrote.
Turner, 74, included a clip of him and his wife, Maya, sitting in a front row of the event, which appeared to be the Absolute Championship Akhmat MMA fight, ACA 196: Silva vs Borisov, held at the Falcon Club Arena, Minsk, Belarus.
An announcer introduced Turner to the crowd with, “I would like to introduce to you our special guest for this night… the legendary golden voice of Deep Purple and Rainbow bands… Mr. Joe Lynn Turner!”
The signature opening chords to the 1972 Deep Purple classic then began to play in the arena.
Fans hit the comment section to note that “Smoke in the Water,” which was recorded with Ian Gillan on vocals more than 50 years ago, isn’t exactly known as a Joe Lynn Turner song.
“He is probably wondering why they picked the one song that has absolutely nothing to do with him… Legend deserves more respect!" one fan wrote on Instagram.
“So glad they played the classic Turner song Smoke On The Water,” another cracked.
“No way they played smoked on the water? It should’ve been I surrender!” a third fan wrote.
“Love Joe but they should of play Stone Cold instead,” added a Facebook fan.
“Playing a song that he had nothing to do with......priceless,” another wrote.
Turner has a huge rock music resume but is best known for his work with Rainbow. In the early 1980s, he was lead singer on three Rainbow albums and was the voice behind some of the band's biggest songs, including “I Surrender,” “Jealous Lover,” “Stone Cold,” and “Street of Dreams.” He also released two albums with Yngwie Malmsteen before joining Deep Purple for one album, “Slaves and Masters" in 1990. In addition, Turner released nine solo albums between 1985 and 2022.
Of course, Turner has performed “Smoke on the Water,” which was written by Gillan, Ritchie Blackmore, Roger Glover, Jon Lord, and Ian Palce, and he even released a single version of the song in 2009. But he is much better known for the signature hit songs that he co-wrote and recorded with Rainbow, such as “Stone Cold” and “Street of Dreams.”
According to Russian Gazette, today Turner lives in both the USA and Eastern Europe, but spends more time in the latter country. After meeting his wife in Moscow, he moved to her native country, Belarus, which explains why he was in town for the MMA event.
