Producer of Whitney Houstons I Will Always Love You Explains Why Viral TikTok Challenge Is So Hard

Even David Foster knows that nailing the "I Will Always Love You" TikTok challenge isn't easy.

The challenge, where social media users are trying to nail the timing of the drum beat after the song's long pause before Houston's big belt of the chorus, that has taken TikTok by storm, really has no strategy according to the famed producer. "It's just so random," Foster told The New York Times on Sunday. "It would have been so logical for me to keep it right on the beat."

Attempted by students at pep rallies to celebrities during interviews, a "Whitney Houston Challenge" search on TikTok garners thousands of results with participants from everyday social media users toGMA anchors as well as DWTScompetitors. "I think it's fun," Foster added of the challenge. "It sort of made me rethink of how long the pause is."

However, he did offer one tip while speaking with the New York Times, sharing that there's a keyboard in the background that starts playing right before the drum beat hits.

"Maybe that will help people," he said.

The song, released in 1992 off the soundtrack of 'The Bodyguard' that starred Houston and Kevin Costner, was a power ballad remake of Dolly Parton's 1974, slowed-down more folk-style version. "I've always tried to put a big moment in a song, but nothing, of course worked as good as that one." Foster said of rearranging the song, which he mentioned got Parton's approval.

Houston's version spent 14 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart upon it's release and ultimately charted for 29 weeks, according to Billboard. The song also won Grammys for Record of The Year and Best Pop Vocal Performance in 1994.
