25th Summer Deaflympics (Swimming)

Thursday, November 20– Tuesday, November 25, 2025 Tokyo Aquatics Center, Tokyo, Japan LCM (50 meters) Results Day 1 Recap | Day 2 Recap | Day 3 Recap

The American team dominated the first day of the Deaflympics, but had quieter performances for the next two.

Let by their stars Carli Cronk and Matthew Klotz, though, Team USA burst back to the forefront on Sunday in Tokyo, leaping to the lead in the gold medal count.

Cronk, who won a pair of individual gold medals on the opening day of the meet, won two more on day 4. She started with a new World Record in the 200 fly in 2:10.84, breaking her own World Record of 2:11.06 swum at an Austin Sectionals meet in 2022. She beat out Italian Olympian Viola Scotto di Carlo by more than eight seconds – the two have been frequent foils this week in Tokyo.

Cronk then came back two finals later and won the 400 IM in 4:55.47, breaking her own Deaflympics Record of 4:58.53. She swam that time at the 2022 Deaflympics where she won eight gold medals.

Cronk is the World Record holder in the event with a best time of 4:48.53 from that same Austin Sectionals meet in 2022.

Cronk is a sophomore at Notre Dame and skipped her team’s mid-season invite to race in Tokyo.

Her fellow American Matthew Klotz also picked up another individual gold, winning the 50 back in 25.94. The previous recognized record was his 25.95 from the 2018 US National Championships; he was faster than that record at the 2021 Olympic Trials, but that swim was never recognized as the World Record.

This swim marks a 3rd straight Deaflympics gold medal in the 50 back.

Also of note on Sunday, Japan’s Ryutaro Ibara won the 400 IM in 4:30.20. That’s his third gold medal of the meet – he’s responsible for all of Japan’s swimming golds after previously winning the 200 free and 200 IM.

Other Day 4 Winners and notables:

Ukraine had a 1-2 finish in the men’s 100 free final, led by a new World Record from Denys Nakonechnyi. That broke his own World Record set in prelims, which in turn broke Marcus Titus‘ record of 51.22 from 2015. Illia Sultanov finished 2nd in 51.18. Federico Tamborrino won the men’s 800 free in 8:27.51. Ukraine won the session-ending men’s 800 free relay, led by a 1:56.02 leadoff from Nakonechnyi. Poland finished 2nd and the Americans (including Collin Davis, Matthew Klotz, Skyler Pizzolato, and Titus) finished 3rd.
