Instant Bears Player Grades: It’s Not About How You Start, It’s How You Finish

It wasn’t the prettiest win, at least early, but the Bears played well down the stretch and finished strong. I’m still not sure how good this team is or how things will go when the schedule picks up starting on Black Friday, but it’s pretty apparent that they have a belief and swagger they haven’t had in quite some time.

Bears Instant Grades

Offense

QB Caleb Williams | B–

He made some really nice throws and reads on time, but it also felt like he missed a few easy throws that he’s going to need to make more consistently. All in all, it was a solid outing. Can he be better? Sure. But he was good enough to win. Consistency is still something he needs to improve; that’s undoubtedly the next step in his development. But he’s winning games as he’s learning, that’s absolutely a positive.

    RB Kyle Monangai & D’Andre Swift | B-

Started slow, but the running game heated up when it had to, mainly thanks to Kyle Monangai.

    WR DJ Moore | A

Probably his best game of the season with a pair of touchdowns and a few other big catches.

    WR Rome Odunze | B-

Solid performance. Even when he’s not putting up his best numbers, he still produces.

WR Luther Burden III | B

Burden is clearly gaining Ben Johnson’s trust, and it’s showing up more and more each week. Not perfect, but another really solid game from him.

    TE Colston Loveland | B

Every week, it seems like he’s getting more and more looks, and he keeps taking advantage of them. He’s turning into a really, really good NFL tight end.

    Offensive Line | C+

The run game was tough in the first half, but it picked up when it needed to in the second half. It wasn’t their best game this season, but it was good enough.

    Defense

    Defensive Line | B+

Montez Sweat had a really nice game, probably his best of the season, and forced the fumble that really pushed the game in the Bears’ favor. Given that the linebackers were so injured, it was a pretty strong effort when they needed it.

    Linebackers | C-

All things considered, with how shorthanded this unit was, it was an admirable effort.

    Secondary | B-

Nashon Wright had himself a good day. Granted, they went up against Mason Rudolph, but for the most part, it was a pretty solid effort.

    Special Teams

    K Cairo Santos | A

Didn’t miss, and had a nice kickoff that pinned Pittsburgh deep early.

    P Tory Taylor | B-

Solid first two punts, but a missed opportunity to pin the Steelers deep with less than two minutes left.

    Bears Coaching

    Ben Johnson | B

He’s got this team believing, no matter how shorthanded they are.

    Dennis Allen | B+

Can’t quite go to an A, but yet again, given how banged-up the defense is, Dennis Allen keeps his unit ready to play and gives the team a chance to win. He’s been excellent this year.
