ROCHESTER, N.Y. – A clipper system will zoom by today, bringing us breezy winds and chances for rain. Gusts will peak at 25-35 MPH, and with the passing attached cold front this afternoon we will see mainly lake effect rain showers. Some showers could include brief pockets of more moderately intense rain, and then both the rain and wind will taper off tonight. Highs will be in the mid 40s, but thanks to the wind will feel like the upper 30s.
Monday looks good for travel. It will be warmer, and temperatures will continue to climb Tuesday and Wednesday. But on Tuesday and Wednesday expect wet weather as two mid latitude waves pass through.
Behind the second wave comes much colder air and gusty winds. Lake effect rain/snow/mix could start up as early as Wednesday night, and through Thanksgiving much of that will turn to lake effect snow, and this cold windy lake effect snow pattern will last through Black Friday. Gusts could easily exceed 30 MPH but we’ll have a better idea as we get closer. It is too early to make any estimates on snowfall locations and totals, but right now signs point to the snow first coming off of Lake Erie (meaning heaviest snow will be south and southwest of Rochester) on Thanksgiving then transitioning to come off of Lake Ontario on Friday (meaning accumulating snow in, east, and southeast of Rochester). This will likely have an impact on travel plans on and after Thanksgiving, so make sure to check back in for updates on the timing, location, and amounts.
Temperatures will stay in the 30s through the weekend before climbing back up to the 40s to start the workweek after Thanksgiving.
