Toughest Test Tonight, Lardis Back on Fire, Prospects in Action, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

Today presents the biggest early test to date for the young Blackhawks’ building process. The Blackhawks were playing well, but collapsed in the third period on Thursday night and never got off the bus on Friday in Buffalo. Two deflating losses in which they were exhausted, undermanned and, on Friday, not competitive for most of the night. How the Blackhawks bounce back from their last four periods will be telling. This is where the veteran teams of the past couple years would struggle to right the ship. But this is a new team with fresh, young faces in the room.

Of course, the task in front of the Blackhawks isn’t an easy one. The best team in the NHL — the 15-1-5 Colorado Avalanche — will be at the United Center tonight.

How does the Blackhawks’ speed stack up against a team the Chicago front office admittedly wanted to model the rebuild after when it began three years ago? How do the young guys stand up and look some of the best players in the world in the eyes? There will undoubtedly be mistakes. And the Blackhawks can’t afford many of those against an absolute wagon. Win or lose, I will be looking for the Blackhawks’ compete and want-to tonight.

    — Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) November 22, 2025 Scott Powers unloaded his notebook of nuggets thru 21 games of the Blackhawks season on Saturday. Highly recommend because there’s a lot in there to unpack. But these two things got my attention. First:

Where [Frank] Nazar is excelling is in retrievals leading to exits. According to Corey Sznajder’s tracking data, Nazar is among the league’s best at it.

“They haven’t had anyone like this in a long time, and it’s a huge burden off the defense,” Sznajder said.

    Second:

Analytically, at least in Evolving Hockey’s goals above replacement, Tyler Bertuzzi has been the Blackhawks’ most valuable player. He’s first on the Blackhawks and tied for 20th in the league at 6.8 GAR. He’s followed by Matt Grzelcyk (5.7 GAR), Jason Dickinson (3.1), [Connor] Bedard (3.0) and Artyom Levshunov (3.0).

    — Scott Powers (@ByScottPowers) November 22, 2025 The Blackhawks were one of ten teams to have a scout at last night’s Toronto-Montreal game. The Blackhawks will play in both teams in about three weeks (Dec. 16 in Toronto, Dec. 18 in Montreal). In the WHL, Nathan Behm had two assists — on the first and last goals of the night — as Kamloops beat Wenatchee 4-2. In the college ranks, Adam Gajan stopped 38 of 40 but suffered his fourth loss of the season, 2-1 in overtime at Colorado College. His night included this ridiculous save:

    — UMD Men's Hockey (@UMDMensHockey) November 23, 2025 Providence beat UMass 5-1 in a matchup that included three Blackhawks prospects. The only point from a Blackhawks prospect was this goal from Julius Sumpf, the first of the game for either team.

Clean faceoff win by Kivi and Sumpf makes no mistake for his second of the season to give us the lead! t.co/mBaJWK1ruV x @ESPNPlus pic.twitter.com/Ay1Waer8CW

    — PC Men's Hockey (@FriarsHockey) November 23, 2025 Finally, in the AHL, the IceHogs lost 5-2 but Nick Lardis scored both of Rockford’s goals. Lardis went five games without a point after Oliver Moore was recalled by the Blackhawks, a stretch that also included a brief injury issue and an illness. He appears to be back now, however. Saturday night was his second straight two-goal game and he has five points (four goals, one assist) in his last three games. Waking up on Sunday morning, Lardis leads all AHL rookies in goals (nine) and points (18) by himself. Here are Lardis’ two goals from last night. Kevin Korchinski had the pretty pass to set up the first one; Aidan Thompson put it on the tee for his second.

The Bulls beat the Wizards last night — by one! The Bears put one of their highly-paid linebackers on IR on Saturday. Even with one arm already signed, the Cubs are reportedly still busy in the relief pitcher market
