Elton John just surprised fans with a brand-new creative move — one rooted in the books that shaped him as a child.
The superstar revealed on Facebook that he has written the foreword for Ultimate Oz Universe Vol. 1: The Lost Lands, the first installment in a newly expanded Oz canon inspired by the works of L. Frank Baum.
In his announcement, John explained how deeply the world of Oz influenced him while growing up in Pinner, England.

“Oz’s enchantments first found me as a boy growing up in Pinner, England, when I was feeling very alone,” he wrote. “When I started reading L. Frank Baum’s books, his imagination fired my own. I wanted to escape, and the world of Oz offered an extraordinary life of storytelling, imagination and creativity.”
He added that the new graphic novel is “a dazzling first instalment in the Ultimate Oz Universe, celebrating the legacy of Baum’s genius and the heritage of colour, unique characters and the triumph of goodness,” ending with: “I hope you love The Lost Lands as much as I have!”
What Is The Lost Lands?
Ultimate Oz Universe Vol. 1: The Lost Lands comes from Cullen Bunn and Larry King, with illustrations by Mike Deodato Jr., lettering by Steve Wands, and colorist Ive Svorcina.The project picks up immediately after The Wizard of Oz and follows Tip on a transformative journey through Oz — reuniting with beloved characters like Dorothy and the Tin Woodman while introducing new ones, including Hungry Tiger and H.M. Wogglebug, T.E.
The book was created with Oz historians to remain faithful to Baum’s canon, while expanding the lore with fresh perspectives and richly illustrated world-building.

In his published foreword, John reflects on how Baum’s stories shaped his imagination and even influenced his music career.
He recounts how Bernie Taupin handed him the lyrics to “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” noting its inspiration from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and how its themes of identity and transformation resonated with audiences worldwide.
“Every moment with a book is precious, and I was dazzled by the first installment in the Ultimate Oz Universe,” John writes. He praises the team behind the project for “the love and attention” they’ve given to Baum’s lesser-known works.
