Arizona State needed to win out with help in the form of losses by contenders to still make it back to the Big 12 title, and the help came on Saturday.
TCU provided one of the losses the Sun Devils needed elsewhere by beating Houston, 17-14. The Cougars had a 38-yard field goal with 46 seconds left to tie it, but Ethan Sanchez’s kick hooked left.
This gave Houston its third conference loss and eliminated it from title contention.
Kansas State was close to providing another needed loss at Utah, but the Utes managed to come back and win, 51-47.
This didn’t eliminate ASU, and neither would Utah winning out despite the head-to-head tiebreaker. We’ll come back to this in a moment.
