WELP: The Bears Put Tremaine Edmunds on Injured Reserve

The Chicago Bears defense has been dealt a serious blow ahead of its Week 12 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers with linebacker Tremaine Edmunds going on injured reserve. Edmunds’ trip to IR comes one day after being ruled OUT for Sunday’s game and came at the end of a week in which he missed all of the team’s practices. And it also comes as part of a series of transaction that were announced earlier on Saturday.

But make no mistake: Tremaine Edmunds going on injured reserve is major news and bums me out:

Tremaine Edmunds was in the midst of his best season since signing with the Bears as a free agent in March 2023. In Year 1 playing for Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen, Edmunds has thrived since making the move to the weakside linebacker spot. The Virginia Tech product tallied 89 tackles (46 solo), 4 interceptions, 9 passes defended, 3 quarterback hits, 3 tackles-for-loss, and 1 sack. Edmunds’ stellar season also earned the standout a defender the 20th-best grade at Pro Football Focus among the 81 linebackers who have played enough snaps to qualify for the leaderboard. So, yes, this is a signiicant loss. One that could keep him out of action for up to six weeks.

Tremaine Edmunds goes on injured reserve — what’s next for the Bears?

We discussed some options for the Bears as they deal with a banged up group of linebackers on Friday. I was hoping it wouldn’t come to it, but this team could have to get extra creative with whatever healthy bodies it has at its disposal.

One of the other transactions the Bears made on Saturday was the signing of linebacker Carl Jones Jr. to the active roster. Jones, in his second season with the Bears, has already played seven games with the team this season. His 10 special teams tackles are the third-most for a Bears player. Given the injuries to Edmunds, T.J. Edwards, and Noah Sewell, Chicago’s football team might need more than special teams snaps from Jones this week (and in the coming weeks).

Also joining the Bears’ active rsoter is running back Brittain Brown. You might recall that Brown had 37 yards on five carries (and his first regular-season touchdown!) in Week 9 against the Bengals. Brown’s promotion from the practice squad coincides with Roschon Johnson going on injured reserve. It has been tough following Chicago’s running back situation because of the injuries, but the group has still found ways to be productive.

Practice squad players Nikola Kalinic (tight end) and Jordan McFadden (offensive lineman) are also being flexed onto the game day roster. With left tackle Theo Benedet being listed on Friday’s injury report as questionable to play, it makes sense that the Bears would have an extra offensive lineman available.
