A designer who created several iconic looks for Diana, Princess of Wales, has died. Paul Costelloe, 80, died after a short illness, according to The Telegraph.
Costelloe initially connected with Princess Diana in 1983. One of his designs caught the eye of one of her ladies in waiting, and he worked with her for 14 years, until her 1997 death.
Several of the ensembles Costelloe designed for Princess Diana were worn in iconic photographs. A yellow and white dress with broad shoulders was photographed on Princess Diana in 1988 when she visited Australia and posed with a group of lifeguards.
Another of Costelloe's designs, a midnight-blue velvet suit, was worn by Princess Diana when she met Luciano Pavarotti on a rainy day in 1991 during a concert in Hyde Park.
A chiffon skirt designed for Princess Diana generated a significant stir at the time that she wore it, because the skirt Costelloe designed looked quite sheer when she was backlit.
In 2021, Costelloe said Princess Diana was "so genteel, so feminine, so warm, so humorous." He made the comments while appearing on Desert Island Discs with BBC Radio.
Costelloe recalled first meeting Princess Diana and telling himself, "God, this is it, Paul, you have made it."
The designer's website notes he was born in Dublin, Ireland, and launched his career in Paris, France, at the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture. He later worked as an assistant to Jacques Esterel, and then went to Italy to work with Marks & Spencer's.
Although Marks & Spencer did not thrive in Italy, Costelloe stayed there for some time before relocating to the United States. He eventually created his own label, Paul Costelloe Collections.
Costelloe continued working until his death. The company stated, "We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Paul Costelloe following a short illness."
The statement shared by The Independent continued, "He was surrounded by his wife and seven children and passed peacefully in London."
A post on the company's Instagram page noted that Costelloe had "always been so grateful for the support you have shown over his more than 40 years at the forefront of fashion."
