Andrew should give ‘relevant information’ to Epstein inquiry, Starmer says

Sir Keir Starmer has urged Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor to testify to the US Congress over his links to the late paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein.

Last week, the former prince missed a deadline to respond to an official summons from US officials to appear before the House Oversight Committee, which is looking into how investigations into Epstein were handled.

On 6 November, the committee asked Mountbatten-Windsor to sit for a “transcribed interview” over his “long-standing friendship” with Epstein, who killed himself in 2019.

Democrat Suhas Subramanyam, who sits on the committee, said Andrew “has been hiding from us, and I think he will continue to try to hide from people doing meaningful investigations of this matter”.

Asked whether the royal should appear before Congress, the Prime Minister told reporters travelling with him to the G-20 summit in Johannesburg that, “in the end that will be a decision for him.”

But the Prime Minister also piled pressure on the former Duke of York, adding: “But my general position is If you have relevant information, you should be prepared to share it.”

“As a general principle I’ve held for a very long time is that anybody who has got relevant information in relation to these kind of cases should give that evidence to those that need it,” Starmer added.

Although the US committee is powerful, it does not have the authority to force testimony from individuals who are not US citizens and reside abroad. Mountbatten-Windsor is under no legal requirement to cooperate.

But Starmer’s intervention will reignite the row about whether Mountbatten-Windsor should face further interrogation over his links to Epstein.

In 2022, the former prince made an out-of-court settlement with Virginia Giuffre – an Epstein survivor who had accused him of sexual assault and rape – without admitting any wrongdoing.

Giuffre died by suicide earlier this year. Mountbatten-Windsor, who was stripped of his prince and Duke of York titles earlier this month, has always maintained that the allegations are false.

Earlier this week, Donald Trump signed a bill to release the remaining Epstein files. A cache of evidence accumulated during two investigations into Epstein will be made public within 30 days, with some exemptions.
