The reigning Premier League champions’ hopes of retaining the title took a huge hit at Anfield. Find the best facts and Opta data on our Liverpool vs Nottingham Forest stats page.
Every defeat that Liverpool have suffered in their increasingly meek defence of the Premier League title has brought a new nadir to their season. This dreadful day and terrible performance was without doubt the worst of the lot.
Nottingham Forest deserve huge credit for their part, though, as their recovery under Sean Dyche gathered pace with a second consecutive win at Anfield. This one, however, was about as convincing a defeat as Liverpool will ever suffer on home soil.
Arne Slot’s side came into the game set to embark on a favourable run of games, facing the easiest next eight fixtures according to our analysis this week, and they set out with purpose as they looked to claw their way against the odds back into the title race. Manager Arne Slot made five changes from the defeat at Manchester City before the international break, and the players initially looked ready and prepared for the battle.

— OptaJoe (@OptaJoe) November 22, 2025However, despite Forest’s lowly position in the table – they came into this game in 19th – or their rapid recent fall down the Opta Power Rankings, they surely would not have been underestimated by their hosts. After all, they won this exact fixture 1-0 last season – the only game Liverpool lost before they were crowned champions.
Liverpool started the game looking like they meant business, and set out on the front foot. Alexis Mac Allister had a shot from close range cleared off the goal line after some fine work down the left from Cody Gakpo, and Milos Kerkez could and maybe should have done better from the promising position he got into inside the penalty area.
However, Forest, now led by former Everton manager Dyche, their third manager already this season, had won their last game and were looking to build some momentum. They certainly didn’t look like a team worrying about damage limitation while playing away from home against the reigning champions, or concerned about any potential threat of relegation. Whenever they had the opportunity to attack, they chucked men forward, and they took their chances impressively – though their opener was not without controversy, and it would have been painful for Liverpool to take.
Last time out, Liverpool had had an equaliser at City disallowed when Andy Robertson was adjudged to have been interfering with play in an offside position. However, afterwards, a five-person Key Match Incidents (KMI) panel voted three to two that the on-field decision to disallow the goal was incorrect.
Here, Murillo slammed into the net from a corner to put Forest in front while Dan Ndoye stood in front of Alisson. On this occasion, the VAR decided Ndoye wasn’t playing an active role, and the goal stood. The goal meant Liverpool have conceded as many goals from set-pieces this season (nine) as they did in the whole of last season.
Minutes later, Forest thought they’d doubled their lead, only to see Igor Jesus’ goal disallowed – also questionably – for handball.
They went in 1-0 up at the break, leaving Liverpool well within touching distance. However, it took only 39 seconds of the second half for Forest to score a second, with Nicolò Savona finishing calmly from Neco Williams’ cut-back.
Slot made changes and Liverpool pushed for a route back into the game, but Forest would find a third to finish the game off instead. It came from Morgan Gibbs-White, who scored in a third consecutive Premier League game for the first time in his career.
Forest played out a historic win to move out of the relegation zone as they became only the fourth visiting side to win a Premier League game at Anfield by a margin of 3+ goals and, in doing so, consigned Liverpool to a position in the bottom half of the table. It has been some fall for the champions.
