Colleen Hoover isn’t offended by critics who think her books are overrated. The prolific writer is the author of bestsellers It Ends With Us, Regretting You, Verity, and Ugly Love, to name a few. Hoover is one of the world’s best-selling authors, but she is as “confused” by her massive success as some of her most staunch critics.
In a recent interview with Elle Magazine, the “Queen of Hollywood” gets bold when it comes to addressing claims her books aren’t worth the hype. Having sold over 50 million copies of her books worldwide, with at least five having been optioned for TV and film, the TikTok-famous Texas native is surprised by the hype, too. Not that she’s not enjoying it.
Hoover’s résumé of superlatives runs deep. Seventeen of her books have been New York Times bestsellers. Her last release, It Starts With Us, had more preorders than any novel in Simon & Schuster’s history and sold more than 800,000 copies on its first day of release, a publishing record.
Yet there are still the nagging “overrated” claims to which Hoover responds:
“I agree. I absolutely agree. I feel like I’ve gotten into this career so accidentally. And as big as it’s gotten, I’ve never made an effort to get here. Because I just am very much confused by it. I don’t get it, because I’ve read my books. I’m not some highbrow literary writer. I write just fun books that are easy reads. And so sometimes I’m like, ‘What is happening?’”
She continues, “It’s like, ‘Okay, they don’t like my work. Plenty of people do, that’s fine,’ she says. “It’s never been a matter of wanting to impress people with my writing skills. Sure, I could probably spend more time on a sentence and write metaphors and stuff that I don’t do. But I don’t enjoy reading that, and I want to write what I like to read. And the people that criticized that kind of writing, could they write a better book? Probably. Have they? Probably not.”

Colleen Hoover Goes From Writer to Hollywood Mogul

BookTok made her famous, which means Hollywood quickly came calling. Hoover’s books have been turned into big Hollywood movies, but the author herself quietly launched her own production company, Heartbones Entertainment. That doesn’t mean she’ll stop writing books.
“Writing books pays the bills,” she says. “That’s always going to be my priority and what I most enjoy.”
