Colo. Sen. Byron Pelton announces campaign for a second term

State Sen. Byron Pelton will run for reelection for District 1 in the 2026 election.

Pelton plans to introduce additional bills to lower property taxes for agricultural facilities and to strengthen penalties for child solicitation and internet luring, he said in an announcement on Thursday. He also promises to introduce a bill that strengthens child trafficking laws and another that would make the agriculture industry exempt from emissions testing.

“I have been and will continue to be a fierce advocate for Agriculture,” Pelton said on his campaign website. “I will fight to protect agriculture in northeast Colorado from legislative attacks, activists and urban legislators.”

District 1 encompasses a large portion of northeastern Weld County and includes Fort Morgan, Sterling and a portion of eastern Greeley, among other communities. The district used to extend farther south near Colorado Springs before its boundaries were redrawn in 2023, shrinking it by a considerable amount.

Pelton currently serves on five different commissions: agriculture and natural resources, appropriations and the transportation and energy commission, along with the capital development committee and legislative council. Additionally, he has sponsored 13 bills in the 2025 session and is currently caucus chair of the Senate Republicans.

On his campaign website, Pelton describes one of his goals for public office as continuing the fight against oil and gas regulations. Pelton also argues that behavioral health funding is heavily skewed toward the state’s urban centers, leaving rural communities in his district underserved.

“I am a Principled Conservative who will work tirelessly to protect the Constitution and your rights from government overreach,” Pelton said on his campaign website. “I have worked aggressively to bring awareness and solutions to the disproportionate amount of funding, facilities and services for Behavioral Health in northeast Colorado to the state legislature and the governor’s office.”

Pelton is the only candidate who has filed to run for the District 1 seat so far. Primaries are set for June 30 next year, with Election Day on Nov. 3.
