Julia Dawn Cole, 68, Who Played Veruca Salt in the Original ‘Willy Wonka,’ Reenacts Golden Goose Scene

She played Veruca Salt, one of the most legendary spoiled brats in film history, in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, but Julia Dawn Cole is absolutely delightful in real life.

The actress, 68, who portrayed the iconic nightmare in the 1971 film starring Gene Wilder as the legendary candy man, popped by Cosm Los Angeles this week and stepped on the Eggdicator, recreating one of her most memorable scenes from the iconic film. For those who may not remember, the gang visits the golden goose room during their tour of the Wonka candy factory. There, geese lay jumbo-sized chocolate eggs, which are then placed on the Eggdicator, which determines whether the eggs are good or bad. Veruca, who demands that her father buy her a golden goose, decides to get on the Eggdicator herself. Unfortunately, the Eggdicator determined she was a bad egg, and she dropped through to the bottom.

In contrast, Cole is a good egg! Cole stepped onto the Eggdicator at Cosm, despite some hesitation.

"I'm having flashbacks," Cole laughed, sporting a red dress similar to the one she wore in the film. She threw her hands out to her sides, just like her iconic character did. "You sure it won't give way?"

    She Honored Gene Wilder's Legacy

Just 12 years old when she starred as Salt in the iconic film, Cole honored Wilder's legacy when he passed away in 2016.

"Gene was sweet, patient, and tolerant on set. He was a generous-spirited man, great fun, and spoke to the kids as adults. He never patronized us and we always vied for his attention; there was a constant race to get our schoolwork done so we could hang out with him. There was never any 'Go away, don’t bother Mr Wilder,' stuff—he was always very amenable," Cole wrote in Time.

Deeply homesick while filming in Germany, Cole had no clue the movie would be so successful. But she found comfort in Wilder's presence.

"The camera doesn’t lie about warmth. Gene was extremely kind, and I don’t think all the chemistry in the film would have come across if he wasn’t. That scene at the end of the movie, when he gives Charlie Bucket a hug and says 'My boy'—that sums him up to me," she elaborated.

If you'd like a fun throwback memory of Cole as Veruca Salt, here she is demanding a golden goose of her own. Oh, Veruca, this won't end well for you!
