UTICA, N.Y. — Four former Marcy Corrections Officers have been sentenced to prison for their involvement in the death of inmate and Greece native Robert Brooks.
News10NBC’s Syracuse affiliate reports Anthony Farina, 49, and Nicholas Anzalone, 44, who were originally charged with murder, were sentenced to 22 years in prison for Brooks’ death. The two accepted plea deals in September to reduce their sentences.
Michael Mashaw, 48, and David Walters, 37, pleaded guilty to manslaughter. Mashaw was sentenced to three to nine years in prison, and Walters was sentenced to two and one-third years to seven years.
Bodycam footage shows guards beating Brooks in a medical exam room in December. He died in the hospital the next day.
Our affiliate says the son of Brooks, Robert Brooks Jr., was there in the courtroom Friday for their sentencing, but did not speak.
Special Prosecutor Onondaga County District Attorney Bill Fitzpatrick read a prepared statement on his behalf.
“I kept my word to him, I told him that I was going to get the five main characters and that the people who were ancillary are held accountable as well,” said Fitzpatrick. “That makes me feel satisfied.”
None of the four former guards sentenced spoke in the courtroom on Friday either, according to our affiliate.
In total, 10 guards were indicted in Brooks’ death. In October, one former guard, David Kinsley, was found guilty of murder and manslaughter. Two others, Nicholas Kieffer and Matthew Galliher, were acquitted of all charges in Brooks’ death.
Since Brooks’ death, his family has called for prison reform, including asking Gov. Kathy Hochul to sign a prison reform bill.
