William Shoesmith from Fleming Island, Florida, just outside of Jacksonville on the St. Johns River, has announced his verbal commitment to the University of Virginia’s class of 2031. He confirmed in writing to SwimSwam:
“I am grateful to announce my commitment to pursue my academic and athletic career at the University of Virginia! I would like to thank God for putting me on this path and allowing me to do what I love. My greatest thanks are to my mom and my dad, and the rest of my family, friends and teammates for supporting me throughout this journey. I would also like to thank Coach Alexis, Peter, Jake, Claire, and Dale for developing me into the swimmer I am today. Also, a big shoutout to Coach Todd, Tyler, Gary, and Courtney and the rest of the coaching staff at UVA for allowing me to live out this dream! GO HOOS!!! ”
Shoesmith is a junior at Fleming Island High School. He swims year-round with the Bolles School Sharks and is one of our “Best of the Rest” recruits from the Way Too Early ranking of top boys’ swimmers in the high school class of 2027.
Last weekend at the 2025 FHSAA Class 3A Swimming and Diving State Championships, Shoesmith won the 500 free (4:25.41), finished 4th in the 200 IM (1:49.73), and led off the 400 free relay (46.87), exploding his lifetime bests in all three events. He came into the meet with PBs of 4:28.54 in the 500, 1:51.98 in the 200 IM, and 47.57 in the 100 free.
That marks a huge improvement from 2024 Class 3A States, when he placed 7th in the 500 free and 12th in the 200 IM and clocked PBs of 4:42.92 and 1:44.54, respectively. Since high school season last year, he has dropped 1.1 seconds in the 100 free, 3.5 in the 200 free, 8 in the 500 free, and 1.5 in the 200 IM.
In club swimming, he swam the 500 free (85th), 1650 free (21st), and 400 IM (69th) at 2024 Winter Juniors East, picking up new times in the mile (15:32.19) and 400 IM (3:59.45). At the 2025 Florida Swimming Senior Championships in March, he wrapped up his SCY season with PBs in the 1000 free (9:10.47), 1650 (15:21.46), 200 fly (1:52.57), and 400 IM (3:56.87) while placing top 8 in the 500/1000/1650 free and 400 IM and finishing 14th in the 200 IM.
He had a big summer, as well, ending with PBs in the 200 free (1:54.85), 400 free (4:00.23), 800 free (8:17.71), 1500 free (15:51.65), and 400 IM (4:37.93) at Summer Junior Nationals.
