Korean third baseman Sung-mun Song has been posted for MLB teams to sign by his KBO club, the Kiwoom Heroes. The 29-year-old third baseman has been one of the best players in Korea the last two seasons, and it seems like he and his club are looking to cash in while they have a good opportunity.
The negotiating window for players from the KBO is 30 days, unlike the 45 days for NPB players, so this will play out well before the end of the year.
This is absolutely huge.Sung-mun Song (also latinized as Sung-moon Song) was the best player in the KBO in 2025, and not by a small margin. The 29 year-old third baseman should have the pick of the litter when choosing who to sign for. t.co/XACLGFCzvb pic.twitter.com/eadaFrxTNA
— Gaijin Baseball/外国人野球 (@GaijinBaseball) November 21, 2025I’m not exactly sure what changed with Song, whether it’s sustainable or translatable to MLB, but the dude BLEW UP over the last two years. He went from being a relatively pedestrian bat to being a star:
(via FanGraphs)As best I can tell, he began pulling the ball a lot more, selling out for a little more power, and pretty clearly started wrecking the ball. Song is a little older than Ha-Seong Kim was when he came over, but, for what it’s worth, their numbers before departing the KBO were pretty comparable, with Song having a slight edge.
As for whether Song is viewed as a starter or a bench type, it depends on whom you ask. From what I read out there, it seems some believe he could be a capable big league starter at third base, where he’s a solid defender, while others see more of a relatively limited utility guy, and without the ability to play shortstop.
For the Cubs, then, they’d have to believe he would translate exceptionally well to MLB, otherwise he wouldn’t be an upgrade over Matt Shaw. Keep in mind, the whole idea behind possibly pursuing Alex Bregman or Kazuma Okamoto is that they could be a big upgrade offensively in 2026, while Shaw dramatically upgrades the bench, and then you sort out who plays where after 2026. If a guy like Song isn’t a sure-thing upgrade in 2026, however, then there’s little point in the pursuit unless you just love him for the bench.
Of course, even if the Cubs aren’t hot on Sung-mun Song, you never know if his presence on the market could help them in other ways. I tend to think the biggest spending area is going to be on the pitching side, and adding a big bat at third base was always a stretch. But, the more options that are out there, the more plausible it becomes.
