The Chicago Blackhawks are bringing back “one of hockey’s most renowned uniforms” and they’re asking fans to wear them for two special games coming up.
The team announced Friday that their “legendary” black jerseys will return as the franchise celebrates 100 years.
“The long-awaited black alternate jersey returns this season as we celebrate 100 years of Blackhawks hockey, giving a nod to some of the greatest players to ever wear the sweater,” Blackhawks Chairman and CEO Danny Wirtz said in a statement. “Originally worn by Tony Amonte, Chris Chelios, Eric Daze and Denis Savard in the 1990s-2000s, these jerseys defined an era and became a symbol of the grit, strength, commitment and legacy that still holds true to today’s era of Blackhawks hockey.”
The team plans to debut the all black jerseys for so-called “Blackout” games next week, asking fans to wear all black to the United Center for their games on Nov. 28 and Nov. 30.
“We’re not just revisiting our past. We’re reactivating one of hockey’s most striking visual statements. Our fans were part of making it an icon under the United Center lights. They’ve been asking for this moment, and we couldn’t wait to give this back to them as the next generation takes the ice,” Jaime Faulkner, president of business operations for the Hawks, said in a release.
The jerseys were originally worn from the 1996-97 season to the 2008-09 seasons and “quickly became a symbol of the franchise’s modern identity.”
The team plans to wear the jerseys for seven games this season. In addition to the two “Blackout” games listed above, the team will also wear them:
Jan. 9 vs. Washington Jan. 23 vs. Tampa Bay Jan. 30 vs. Columbus March 14 against Vegas March 20 vs. ColoradoFans can purchase the jerseys at the Blackhawks store on Michigan Avenue, the Madhouse Team Store in the United Center and on CBHShop.com, though the team notes that for those attending the Blackout games next week, shipping times may delay arrival.
