Bad Company Drummer Admits Replacing Paul Rodgers Was Their Biggest Mistake

The English rock band, Bad Company, became a prominent name after their debut in 1973, but by 1982, tensions rose that led to a major change. Bad Company frontman Paul Rodgers left, with drummer Simon Kirke revealing that replacing him ruined the band's image.

Kirke explained on Billy Corgan’s podcast, The Magnificent Others, that he was "coerced" at the time to make the big change. During the band's career high high-earning multi-platinum success, Rodgers had quit after tensions ran high due to arguments.

Bad Company went on a hiatus until the remaining members, including Kirke, decided to get the band back together without Rodgers. They took on Brian Howe at the suggestion of Mick Jones from Foreigner.

While Howe was eager to be the band's frontman, and they ended up selling millions of albums, having him as the band's frontman changed the band's image.

"I was doing a lot of drugs and drinking and I wanted to tour. I wanted to continue [Bad Company’s] name. And we did. I mean, we sold millions of albums with Brian, but it kind of tarnished -- I think it tarnished the reputation a little bit," said Kirke.

He added, "The whole direction of the band kind of skewed away from the blues, [and] became more heavy metal… It was a period which I do regret. And I'll put my hand up and say, me and Mick [Ralphs] kind of made a knee jerk decision and we took this guy on board."

After Rodgers's departure, Kirke had hoped that Howe would be the missing link and fit into the rest of the band like a puzzle piece. It was anything but smooth sailing, as the band members started to disagree with Howe.

Above all, the band wasn't on board with Howe using the band's shows as a chance to give his political opinions and speeches. Kirk remembers yelling at Howe not to "use this band as a political forum" while in the dressing room.

Howe left Bad Company in 1992, with Kirke revealing he and the band asked him to leave.

"He'd say he left, but we did ask him to leave. And it's a shame because I know that his heart was in the right place," said Kirke, adding he wouldn't do it again if he had the chance.
