Israel plans to train youth from Suwayda in firefighting

Israeli media have reported that around 20 young Druze from Syria’s Suwayda province (in southern Syria) are to undergo an intensive firefighting course inside Israel.

According to a report published by the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth on Thursday, November 20, the courses will run over three weeks, utilizing advanced simulation systems. Participants will learn how to handle complex scenarios, including vehicle, residential, and shopping center fires, as well as rescue techniques in hazardous environments.

At the end of the training, the young trainees will return to Suwayda equipped with urban and forest protection gear, fire-resistant uniforms, personal rescue kits, and a new fire truck, to establish a local fire station serving the Druze area in the part of the Golan Heights controlled by Israel.

The initiative, as described by the Israeli newspaper, is led by Israeli Minister of National Security Itamar Ben Gvir, whose ministry oversees Israel’s Fire and Rescue Service, in coordination with Israel’s National Security Council, as part of a broader government plan to boost investment in the Druze community.

According to the report, Israel does not view the project as purely humanitarian, but also as a way to strengthen its ties with Syrian Druze, many of whom have relatives inside Israel.

Ben Gvir’s statements stressed that Israel will continue to deepen its relationship with the Druze in Syria, adding that this includes promoting senior Druze officers within the national security services and providing support in any area they need.

There has been no official comment from the Syrian government on the Israeli newspaper’s report as of the time of publication.

    Netanyahu visits southern Syria

On 19 November, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu entered southern Syria, accompanied by a delegation of government officials.

The delegation included, alongside the prime minister, Defense Minister Israel Katz, Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, and Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir.

Netanyahu said on X, “I visited the area of the Golan Heights in Syria, received an operational briefing, and met with the fighters who bravely defend Israel every day (…) I am proud of our fighters.”

He attached to his post photos taken inside the occupied Syrian territories.

“Netanyahu and Katz’s tour of Syrian territory comes amid US efforts to conclude a security agreement between Israel and Syria,” Israel’s Channel 12 reported on X.

In a 13 November interview with Australian journalist Erin Molan on her program “THE ERIN MOLAN SHOW”, Netanyahu stressed that the security of the Druze in the area is one of his priorities, adding that the abuses and massacres suffered by Syrian Druze are comparable in their horror to the 7 October massacre carried out by Hamas in Gaza.

“I acted to protect our Druze brothers, and I want to reach an arrangement that will ensure the demilitarization of southwestern Syria and provide lasting protection for the Druze minority there,” he said.

On 16 July, the Israeli army carried out three airstrikes on the General Staff headquarters building in Damascus, in response to the Syrian army’s intervention to break up the fighting in Suwayda between local factions and tribal groups.

On his level of trust in the Syrian side, Netanyahu cited a phrase by former US President Ronald Reagan about dealing with the Soviet Union, “Trust, but verify”, adding, “As for me, I say, trust, do not trust, but verify.”
