A reminder that the tender deadline for arbitration-eligible players is 7pm CT tonight. The decisions are relatively straightforward for the Cubs (Steele and Assad obviously, Morgan probably, and McGuire almost certainly not), but around baseball, we will see the free agent pool add some interesting names. We could also see some “pre-tender” deals for guys who are on the border of a non-tender (Eli Morgan would make sense for the Cubs on that one). Very rarely, you also could see a trade – a team jumping in to acquire a guy before he is non-tendered, for example – and the Cubs do have loads of 40-man space available. So just keeping that on the radar. I see the whole “the Cubs were surprised he accepted so now they don’t have any money” bs increasingly making the rounds, so I’m gonna re-up my post about how that better be nonsense. I will also pointed out, as Rushing Baseball reminds folks, that there’s another way to think about this: Imanaga is getting an $8.75 million raise from last year. That’s a lot, but it’s hardly prohibitive of ANYTHING. And that’s important when you remember that, if Imanaga had departed, the Cubs almost certainly would’ve needed to add two starting pitchers. The Cubs made the offer. They are not total idiots. They knew there was a chance he would accept, and they were good with him at that price, WHILE KNOWING they needed another starting pitcher at the front of the rotation. It’s just so silly to suggest that changed. Also, again: the Cubs should have PLENTY of money still available this offseason. I have seen The Athletic’s mention of Corey Seager having the Braves on his no-trade list, but, read in context, it’s not clear that anyone is reporting that Seager is actually available in trade. None of it would necessarily directly impact the Cubs, but if he WERE available in trade, I’m sure it would impact the market overall. He’s kind of a monster when healthy. Seager, 31, is owed $31.5 million over each of the next six seasons. More generally, yes, there have been some rumors that the Rangers would like to cut payroll a bit. Which means I am going to dream on a Jacob deGrom trade, even though I know it’ll never happen; and, even if it did, it wouldn’t be to the Cubs; and, even if it was, there’s so much risk there. A big, good reminder that it is not always the case that you can look at pitch metrics – shape, velo, etc. – and say THIS type is ALWAYS better than THAT type:

It can be hard for pitchers to buy into this idea of not always chasing bigger shapes.Sometimes the 85 mph sweeper with 12" of break might be a much better fit than the 80 mph sweeper with 20" of break (and sometimes the answer is to not throw a sweeper and instead throw a… t.co/U7cVbkuDLL

    — Ben Brewster (@TreadAthletics) November 20, 2025 It’s why I am still so soft on metrics like Stuff+. It’s interesting, and useful in some limited cases. Yes, maybe, in the aggregate, this type of shape at this velo is the “better” pitch, but what if it just doesn’t work for a particular pitcher? And what if that pitcher actually gets more results out of a “lesser” pitch? I’m not trying to be a luddite here, but when even Tread – one of the best pitching outfits in the country – is making this point, I’m inclined to listen. It’s wild that all three of Christopher Morel, Alexander Canario, and Luis Vazquez were DFA’d this week. This is also pretty wild (not because they would be good picks, but just how many of them have busted so quickly):

The 2025 Rule 5 Draft has a chance to be insane..Frank Mozzicato: 7th pick in 21Benny Montgomery: 8th pick in 21Jacob Berry: 6th pick in 22Gavin Cross: 9th pick in 22Kevin Parada: 11th pick in 22Daniel Susac: 19th pick in 22All are now available ?

    — The Mets Newsletter (@metsnewsletter) November 20, 2025 I feel like this energy is not what you’d associate with a pitcher who is an extreme contact-manager, and who strikes out very few batters:

    — Rob Friedman (@PitchingNinja) November 20, 2025 The Women’s Professional Baseball League, which kicks off next summer, had their first draft. Obviously it’s an atypical one, because you’re drafting your whole team. It makes me think about an expansion draft in MLB, which we haven’t seen in nearly 30 years at this point. Eventually, when the league adds another couple teams – the goal was by the end of this decade – there will be an expansion draft (basically, you get to protect X number of players in your organization, and everyone else is available to the two new teams). It’s kinda scary, because you can only lose players, but it’s also pretty fun and crazy. I have an idea for Ocean’s 14:
