Olympic Champion Duncan Scott Is First Swimmer Selected For 2026 Commonwealth Games

By Retta Race on SwimSwam

Based on his performance as a member of the British men’s 4x200m free relay at this year’s World Championships, Olympic champion Duncan Scott is officially the first swimmer selected for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Next year’s edition of the quadrennial event returns to Glasgow, the same city which hosted the elite multi-sport competition in 2014, where now-28-year-old Scott made his debut.

In that edition, he collected silver in the men’s 4x200m free relay but has since accumulated an additional 12 pieces of hardware over the course of the 2018 Gold Coast and 2022 Birmingham Games.

Scotland’s most decorated Commonwealth Games athlete in history said recently, “To think my first-ever Commonwealth Games was in 2014 and for the Games to be Glasgow for 2026 is pretty special. The momentum is really starting to build, and the Games are coming round fast.

“I have fond memories of 2014; the way the country got behind all the athletes, and how Team Scotland responded to that in terms of success.

“The Scottish fans always bring something different, and with the Commonwealth Games coming back to Glasgow next year, hopefully they will bring the excitement once again.” (Stirling)

“I love that we are all part of a team where everyone has a different Everest,” Scott told BBC Sport Scotland.

“Some just want to be there, some want to reach a final, others are looking for a medal, and some are big-name Olympians and I love that disparity.

“In Team GB, it’s all about the elite, but in Team Scotland we’ve all grown up together in the sport and know each other’s journeys and are really invested in each other being successful, in whatever form that takes.

“Each person’s goal is just as important to everyone else – and I love that.”

Elinor Middlemiss, Team Scotland Chef de Mission, said: “We are delighted to welcome Duncan back to the team for Glasgow 2026.

“Duncan’s successes with both Team Scotland and Team GB have been truly inspirational and we look forward to the next chapter in Glasgow next summer, the city where he won his very first medal with Team Scotland.

“Athletes of the calibre of Duncan and the three athletics team members named so far are spearheading our selections at this early stage from what is already shaping up to be a strong team.” (Stirling)
