Writer Michael Chabon is known for his Pulitzer Prize–winning novel The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, but the author and screenwriter is also a music aficionado who counts Steely Dan and the band Yes as major influences. Chabon can now add soundtrack curator to his list of accolades, having created his own personal playlist to accompany Oprah’s Book Club November pick Some Bright Nowhere, written by Chabon’s longtime friend Ann Packer.
In fact, it was Packer who asked Chabon to curate a playlist of songs that would support the mood and tone of Some Bright Nowhere when she found herself unable to create one of her own.
In a text exchange with Chabon, Packer wrote, “You know Largehearted Boy? I’ve been asked to create a playlist for Some Bright Nowhere, and I just can’t.”
Chabon shared to his Substack, “Over the years, reaching way back to the cassette era, I’ve made a lot of mixtapes and playlists for other people: as gifts and love offerings, courtship gestures, mementos, nostalgic reminders of a shared history, expressions of friendship and affection, and tools for properly educating my kids (along with any other souls in need of musical guidance).”

Packer’s novel deals with themes of love and loss, and Chabon chose songs accordingly, starting with Sufjan Stevens’ “Death With Dignity,” which seems fitting for those who have read Some Bright Nowhere.
