ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A former doctoral conducting student at the Eastman School of Music, Rebecca Bryant Novak, has claimed she was silenced after reporting harassment. Now, she is using music to speak out.
Novak conducted a volunteer orchestra on Thursday night at the Hochstein School of Music. She said she was expelled earlier this year after filing a complaint against a professor.
The event was sponsored by the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression. The organization said this was its first classical music concert in support of free expression.
The University of Rochester did not respond to News10NBC’s request for comment Thursday. However, UR previously stated, “Illegal harassment and retaliation are prohibited, and the university has complied with all state and federal law in its handling of the issues raised by Rebecca Bryant Novak.”
