Actor and comedian Chevy Chase is opening up about his Saturday Night Live departure.
Entertainment Weekly reported that Chase mentioned exiting the series, created by Lorne Michaels, during Season 2, which premiered in 1976, in his CNN Films documentary I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not
"It was a mistake to leave SNL," said Chase while filming his upcoming documentary, per its November 20 trailer.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Michaels spoke about Chase exiting SNL after making waves during the show's first season in the documentary.
"The forces pulling him were money, power, and all of that. And when Hollywood wants you, they're pretty good at it," said Michaels.
Us Weekly reported that Chase said he exited SNL, filmed in New York City, because of his relationship with his second ex-wife, the late Jacqueline Carlin.
“I left because I was stricken with a girl from L.A. that I met, and in fact married, but for only a couple of years,” said Chase, who is married to Jayni Chase, in a February 2025 interview on Morning Joe.
In addition, he said that the show's original 1975 cast, including John Belushi, George Coe, Garrett Morris, Gilda Radner, Dan Aykroyd, Jane Curtin, Michael O'Donoghue, and Laraine Newman, was "a great group of people."
"I shouldn't have left," said the 82-year-old on the Morning Joe interview.
Jane Curtin Spoke About Chevy Chase's Popularity on 'SNL'
Curtin spoke about Chase's immense popularity during the sketch comedy's first season in a 2015 interview with the Television Academy Foundation. According to Curtin, Chase was a favorite among viewers because he "was easy on the eyes back then." In addition, she said he "could present himself in a way that was funny and accessible to a certain degree."
"When he entered the room, the room changed. And so he had that ability. So it made sense that he would be the face," said Curtin during the interview.
She said, however, that "the face got a little big" and eventually began to bother some of the other SNL Season 1 stars, specifically Belushi.
"John wanted to be the face and other people wanted to be the face and give us a chance to be the face and it was difficult for them. So, it was tense when that happened," said Curtin, who left SNL after its fifth season in 1980, per IMDb.
