ROCHESTER, N.Y. – This time of year, brings no shortage of weather challenges, but the comment I hear most often concerns the persistent cloud cover. Historical observations from the Rochester Airport support that perception. Since early November, the cloud cover has dominated our skies.
Living near the Great Lakes certainly contributes to our gray conditions, but it is not the entire story. A major factor is the seasonal reduction in daylight and the steadily decreasing sun angle. On June 21, the sun reaches a maximum height of about 70 degrees in our sky. As we move into fall, daylight decreases rapidly, and by the winter solstice on December 21, the sun climbs to only about 23 degrees above the horizon.
This low sun angle means more sunlight is reflected off the tops of clouds, and far less solar energy penetrates into the lower atmosphere. As a result, the surface does not warm or mix as efficiently. That mixing helps dry the lower atmosphere, but during this season, it simply does not happen to the same degree. The outcome is the persistent, stagnant cloud cover we experience each year.
It may be a bit “tongue-in-cheek,” but we often say this season scores quite high on the “dismality index.” While it may feel dreary in Rochester this time of the year, there is an upside. It makes us appreciate the bright days that much more.
