Cynthia Erivo is finally opening up about the terrifying moment a man rushed at Ariana Grande on the red carpet at the Wicked: For Good Singapore premiere on Thursday, Nov. 13.
During the Thursday, Nov. 20 episode of the TODAY Show, the actress walked viewers through her thought process when she jumped in to protect her co-star from the assailant.
“I wasn’t really thinking, I just wanted to make sure everyone was safe," she explained. "I’m sure he didn’t mean us harm but you never know with those things and I wanted to make sure she was OK. That was my first instinct.”

As seen in the viral TikTok clip, a man — identified by the Internet as Johnson Wen — jumped the barricade and rushed directly towards Grande. Erivo sprung into action immediately, pushing the man away off her co-star as security worked to remove him from the carpet.
According to the BBC, the man who attacked Grande was later arrested and charged with being a public nuisance. The New York Times also reported that he was sentenced to nine days in jail.
Wen, a 26-year-old man from Australia, is notorious online for pulling similar stunts. His Instagram account feature many videos of him rushing at stars, including Katy Perry and The Weeknd.

Also during her TODAY interview, Erivo opened up about her friendship with Grande — as fans have noticed throughout both the Wicked and Wicked: For Good press tours that the pair appear inseparable.
“This is a long-lasting friendship for us,” Erivo told TODAY host Savannah Guthrie. “We’re kind of like sisters at this moment. And I think we’ve both learned from each other and given each other some really, really beautiful gifts. We’ve really looked after each other through this.”
Wicked: For Good premieres in U.S. theaters on Friday, Nov. 21.
