Behind-the-Scenes Love for Nico Hoerner

There’s a decent argument that Nico Hoerner was the MVP of the 2025 Chicago Cubs. The 28-year-old second baseman put up a career-best .297/.345/.394/109 wRC+ slash line and 4.8 WAR, a career-low 7.6% strikeout rate, stole 29 bases, scored 89 runs, drove in 61, and played some of the best defense of any player in baseball. He was also among the most clutch hitters in baseball, constantly coming through when the Cubs needed him.

Like many other Cubs, Hoerner is under contract through 2026, and then free agency arrives. We’ll see what the plan is there for a guy who has played his way toward a $100+ million contract, and who also plays at an area of theoretical depth for the Cubs (not that anyone who replaces Hoerner would immediately match his overall value … ).

In the meantime, I wanted to share a couple tidbits from Bruce Levine at Marquee that underscore how valuable Nico Hoerner is to the Cubs.

First, a note on who rallied the troops as the Cubs tried to come back in their division series this year against the Brewers:

“According to player sources, it was a Hoerner speech to the whole team that helped inspire the Cubs to fight back and force a Game 5 against the Milwaukee Brewers in the NLDS. That commentary came after the Cubs lost the first two games of the series.”

It won’t go down in the pantheon with Jason Heyward’s rain delay World Series speech, but still. You love hearing that about a guy taking the reins and leading his teammates in the biggest moments of the season.

Second, a take on Hoerner’s value from another club’s perspective:

“Our club loves Hoerner,” an NL scout told me in September. “He is the most underrated player on the Cubs. He can beat you with a clutch base hit or with his legs. He’s the best baserunner on a very good baserunning club. Clutch hitting and moving players over make him a throwback type. My friends in the Cubs system tell me he is an absolute leader on that team. Winner is what I call Nico Hoerner.”

I know it’s got a whiff of meatbally flavor to it, but still. All of that rings true, and feels like part of the value add with a guy like Hoerner. He is a guy who is always going to work his ass off to make sure he gets the most out of his talent, AND pushes his teammates to do the same.
