I am a frequent traveler myself, from living in hotels across the country for a year while performing on a Broadway tour to going on solo trips for fun–I’ve seen it all. Something as a single woman that I pay close attention to is travel safety. I’ve noticed that a lot of people have a little too much trust in the people around them, and at the end of the day it’s better to be safe than sorry. For women and solo travelers specifically, travel safety is something that isn’t spoken about enough.
There’s one specific thing that you should never ever do at hotel check-in to keep yourself and your family safe, and I’m going to cover every aspect of this tip to help keep you happy and healthy for your next hotel stay.

She calls herself “the street smart blonde,” and often shares incredible tips that could end up saving your life. In one video about hotel safety, Eve shares an incredibly valuable tip. She says that you should never speak your personal information out loud while checking in at a hotel. There could be other guests or people around who are listening who have ill intentions, and that could compromise your safety.
When you have to give your full name and billing address, you can easily hand the staff your license which will have that information on it. You can simply let them know that you’d like to not speak any of your personal information out loud. If you’re traveling alone, make sure to never announce that out loud as well. Lastly, let the check-in staff know that you would like them to write your room number down instead of saying it out loud.
While a lot of this can seem like you’re being over-cautious, I truly believe that it’s better to be safe than sorry. When traveling, even in a place that feels very safe, you shouldn’t be letting your guard down.

Other Tips To Stay Safe In Hotels
Since I solo-travel quite often, I am constantly making sure that I stay safe. I have a few extra precautions that I take when traveling, and I urge others to do the same. First and foremost, I carry a portable door lock with me at all times. When I enter my hotel room, I secure the lock, and this keeps me extra safe. Considering the hotel staff and managers have access to all of the rooms, it will offer you extra protection to add another lock that will keep people out who have a key to your room.

Once I’m inside my room, I always inspect the room thoroughly. Check under the bed, behind curtains, in closets and other smaller spaces. Make sure that the phone in the room works and is able to call the front desk. Lastly, lock up any valuables into the hotel room safe. I also always check the back of the hotel door for the fire safety plan, just to be aware of where the closest exit is from my room. All of this brings me peace of mind, and I’m able to enjoy my travels much more knowing that I’ve taken all of the precautions to stay safe.
