Red Kettle campaign kicks off, aiming to raise $300K for Rochester families

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Salvation Army is set to kick off its annual Red Kettle campaign on Thursday, aiming to raise $300,000 for Rochester families.

It’s the biggest fundraiser for the Salvation Army, essentially funding a year’s work. Right now, 1,200 families are hoping the Salvation Army can step in for Christmas.

“It’s a toy shop. We don’t pre-bag the toys, so they get to walk around where we set our toy shop up at one of our other locations,” said Maj. Richard Starkey, director of county operations for Monroe County. “And, you know, sometimes, just their reaction or their words or some of the meanings. Thank you. It helps us to know the children are going to have toys under their trees for them. Literally would not have toys under the tree in front of them.”

In order to hear these bells and raise hundreds of thousands of dollars, the Salvation Army needs your help.

“We might have somebody at Tops in Greece, which is a great kettle location from 10 to 12, and then there’s nobody there from 12 to 4,” Maj. Starkey said. “And obviously, like I said, you know, we can’t raise money if there’s nobody on the kettle.”

They need 2,000 volunteers through Christmas Eve. If you don’t want to brave the cold, the Tops locations are all inside. You can sign up here.

Also new this year is the Battle of the Badges, a friendly competition between first responders to see who can raise the most funds. Whoever wins will get a trophy and some bragging rights for the next year.

The Salvation Army is still happy to take your pennies, but you can leave cash and some spots even have tap to pay from your phone. There’s also a virtual kettle. You can donate to that here.
