90s Rock Band Plays Show for the First Time in 7 Years

Though The Bloody Valentine, a shoegaze rock band that was formed in 1983, has a headlining show scheduled at Dublin's 3Arena this upcoming Saturday, their fans were in for a treat.

According to Stereogum, the Dublin concert promoter Foggy Notions emailed out details for a special live event happening at a surprise location on Monday. The show ended up happening on Wednesday night at the National Stadium, a boxing/wrestling facility that doubles as a music venue and holds around 2,000 people.

The band, which consists of members Bilinda Butcher, Kevin Shields, Debbie Googie and Colm Ó Cíosóig, performed many of their top hits, including "When You Sleep" and "Soon." They also performed multiple songs from their albums and deep cuts, such as "Off Your Face" for the very first time.

Around a year ago, My Bloody Valentine announced that they were performing their first concert since 2018, which also marks their first headlining show in Ireland since 1992. Since then, they added more shows around the United Kingdom for later this month, a performance at Clockflap in Hong Kong in December, a bunch of shows throughout Japan next February and an appearance at Primavera Sound in Barcelona this upcoming June.

Formed in Dublin in 1983, My Bloody Valentine is widely cited as a pioneering act in the shoegaze genre, an indie and alternative rock subgenre from the late 1980s that's defined by its ethereal and hazy soundscapes, obscured vocals and heavy use of guitar effects like distortion, reverb and echo.

Following several unsuccessful early releases and membership changes, My Bloody Valentine signed to Creation Records in 1988. The band released several successful EPs and the albums Isn't Anything in 1988 and Loveless in 1991. However, My Bloody Valentine were dropped by Creation after its release due to the album's extensive production costs. A year later, the band signed to Island Records and recorded several albums' worth of unreleased material, but remained largely inactive.

Three years later, in 1995, Googe and Ó Cíosóig left the band, with Butcher leaving in 1997. But 10 years later, My Bloody Valentine reunited and went on a world tour. Their last album, m b v, was released in 2013, and they have not released any new music since.

Fans can go to their official website for more information about their upcoming shows and purchase tickets.
