Fans of Diane Keaton and her popular holiday film The Family Stone just got a bittersweet update, as the writer-director, Thomas Bezucha, officially confirmed that a sequel is in the works.
Bezucha shared the news in a new interview with CNN, reflecting on the loss of Keaton, who played one of the lead characters, Sybil Stone. He said, "I’ve been haunted by the loss of Sybil for months now while I worked on it, and so this was a blow on a tender bruise already. Mentally, I’ve been spending time in that house where I’ve been missing her for a while already.”
He noted that he was already working on a script for a second film before Keaton died in October. Her death appeared to further fuel his desire to make the project, with Bezucha saying that he hopes he can "do a good job by the rest of the cast" and "honor her even more."
Bezucha also shared insight into his thought process when he first started working on the sequel, explaining that he told his producer that he wouldn't do it unless the main cast of the original film were to return, saying, "I’m not interested in the Brady family reunion without the original Jan."

The Family Stone was released in 2005, with the main cast featuring Keaton, Sarah Jessica Parker, Rachel McAdams, Craig T. Nelson, Dermot Mulroney, Luke Wilson, Elizabeth Reaser, Claire Danes, and Tyrone Giordano.
In the classic holiday movie, Mulroney's character Everett Stone brings his high-strung girlfriend Meredith, played by Parker, to spend the holidays with his family, including his parents and four siblings. It doesn't exactly go well for Meredith, and soon her sister Julie, played by Danes, arrives to provide support, only to make the situation even more complicated as feelings stir between a few unsuspecting people.
In the years since the movie's release, The Family Stone has become a fan-favorite film to watch during the winter holidays, and fans are excited at the prospect of a sequel. A second film has not been officially greenlit, but Bezucha is hard at work completing the script.
