PENFIELD, N.Y. — Customers were caught by surprise when they showed up at The UPS Store on Empire Boulevard in Penfield only to find it closed with packages locked inside.
Ron Nagley, a customer who called News10NBC about the closure, found the locks already changed when he arrived Tuesday to pick up two packages, including a medical back brace.
“The other day I was able to go in,” Nagley said. “They give you the receipts so you can come and pick them up. So I know they’re in the back.”
By Wednesday, Nagley found his packages had been moved to The UPS Store at 12 Corners in Brighton. News10NBC’s Chief Investigative Reporter Berkeley Brean saw customer after customer turned away Tuesday and again Wednesday.
“It kind of upsets me because it says I have to all the way to Dewey Avenue,” said customer Paul Daccursio.
“I live out in Sodus,” said customer Tess Andre when asked if this was her closest UPS Store location.
One man expressed his surprise to Brean, saying “This UPS?”“Closed,” Brean said.“Surprise, surprise.”
On Wednesday, a woman told Brean she didn’t know about the closure and that the website still said the store was open. Another man said, “We’re making a return to Amazon. Closed out of nowhere. Ridiculous.”
Brean attempted to contact the store owner via text, email and phone but received no replies. State Supreme Court records show two lawsuits filed against the store this year – one in June by Xerox for non-payment on equipment like the printer in the lobby totaling $43,567.99 and another in September by Vox Funding, a last resort loan company, for $39,383.24.
“As I look into the store beyond the window and gate, I see packages back there, boxes back there just sitting there,” Brean reported. “People are told they can go to Dewey Avenue which is 20 minutes away, Park Avenue which is 15 minutes away or 12 Corners in Brighton which is about 15 to 20 minutes away.”
Corporate UPS has since confirmed that packages and mail addressed to the store in BayTowne Plaza will automatically go to The UPS Store at 12 Corners in Brighton. The website for the Penfield store now says “permanently closed.”
