ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The city of Rochester is working to clear fallen leaves throughout November, aiming to prevent potential road hazards.
Fallen leaves can clog sewage drains and create slick road conditions, so the city advises residents not to blow or rake leaves onto the street during its fall leaf collection.
“We touch every street in the city of Rochester within 30 days,” Director of operations Karen St. Aubin said. “So during loose leaf collection, we ask our residents to bring their leaves out between the sidewalk and the curb so we can come by and pick them up.”
Aubin said leaves on the street pose a danger to drivers.
“The catch basins can get clogged and it can hold water above ground,” she said. “Also, the leaves get very wet. If you had a lot of rain, leaves get wet. And then as it gets colder, they can freeze and then cause slippery conditions on the roadways.”
Residents whose trash was picked up by the city do not need to wait for November’s leaf collection. Bags of leaves can always be placed out for pickup on trash collection day.
Leaves collected throughout November are composted over the next couple of months. The compost is given to city residents free of charge through Rochester’s Materials Give Back program.
“You’ll see our teams out with blowers and we’re blowing all the leaves out,” St. Aubin said. “We have heavy equipment that’s picking it up and putting it into containers that can be taken away to go to a compost site.”
