Beloved ’90s Country Star Battling Cancer to Be Honored in Emotional 2-Night Ryman Tribute

The Mavericks are turning a difficult season into a celebration of music, community and one of the most distinctive voices in modern country and Americana.

The band has announced a special two-night tribute set for Dec. 5 & 6 at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville to honor frontman Raul Malo as he battles cancer.

In an Instagram post, the group shared, "We’re proud to announce Dance The Night Away: A 35-Year Musical Legacy Celebrating The Mavericks & Honoring Raul Malo ... A 2-night tribute show in honor of Raul and the band’s decades-long history and contributions to American and Latin music, these special evenings will feature guest appearances from an exceptional lineup of friends and artists performing selections from The Mavericks’ storied catalog of classics."

An impressive list of friends will take the stage to salute Malo and the band’s rich catalog, from country and Americana favorites to Latin-infused classics that helped redefine the genre.

continued with the lineup: “Backed by The Mavericks, the event will feature performances from Chuck Mead, Cimafunk, Emily West, Hector Tellez Jr., Jaime Hanna, James Otto, Jamey Johnson, JD McPherson, Jeff Hanna, Jesse Dayton, Jim Lauderdale, Jimmie Vaughan, Joshua Ray Walker, Maggie Rose, Mandy Barnett, Marty Stuart, Nicole Atkins, Nikki Lane, Patty Griffin, Ray Benson, Seth Walker, Steve Earle, Sweet Lizzy Project, Wade Hayes, Waylon Payne, Wendy Moten and more to be announced."

Raul Malo Will Attend — But Not Perform

Malo, who revealed earlier this year that his cancer had progressed and later shared that he is being treated for leptomeningeal metastases (LMD), plans to attend both nights at the Ryman but will not perform.

“While Raul is not able to perform, he will be present and honored throughout both nights,” the band wrote. “These shows will take the place of our previously scheduled Ryman dates, with all tickets to remain valid and no new tickets necessary. We look forward to seeing you all in December for a celebration of music, memories, and the remarkable legacy of Raul Malo and The Mavericks."

In an accompanying press release, Malo added his own gratitude and excitement about the event. “I’m really looking forward to these two nights at the Ryman," he said. "The overwhelming support and love from my musician friends, fans, friends and family will prove these shows to be something special."

Formed in Miami in the late ’80s and later based in Nashville, The Mavericks have long been one of country music’s most adventurous bands. Across multiple decades, they’ve earned Grammy, ACM and CMA Awards while building a fiercely loyal fanbase with genre-bending hits like “Here Comes the Rain,” “All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down” and “Dance the Night Away.”

Malo first shared his cancer diagnosis publicly earlier this year, later revealing in a candid update that “things have taken a turn” as the disease progressed. In that message, he explained that he had developed LMD and would begin radiation, with chemotherapy and alternative therapies also on the table. Despite the seriousness of his condition, he emphasized that he felt surrounded by love and support, writing that he was “in no way alone, or scared,” and praising his wife, sons, family, team, crew, band and fans.

As his treatment plan intensified, The Mavericks canceled their remaining 2025 tour dates—except for the “something special” promised at the Ryman. The newly announced tribute shows are that promise fulfilled.

Country icon Dwight Yoakam, who spent much of 2025 sharing the stage with The Mavericks on a co-headlining tour, recently shared his own emotional message about Malo stepping away from the road to focus on his health, writing, '“I will deeply miss the exuberant and enormous musical joy that you and the rest of The Mavericks brought to the stage every night that we played our shows together. I know that I speak for the thousands of fans you touched with each of those performances when I say we are holding you in our thoughts, and sending our prayers for healing.”
